How I am upgrading myself with UpGrad's Advanced Digital Marketing Program?

My Digital Marketing Journey 

I come from an engineering background, with few years of coding experience and then joined my family business of a travel firm. I knew digital marketing of my business could bring in a lot of benefits, the most obvious being the reach. So, when I joined the travel firm, I started with building our social media presence in Facebook and Instagram with occasional posts. Sometimes a single post would take weeks, planning the content, making a creative, looking for attractive images to support and then posting it in various social media platform. I couldn’t be regular and consistent with the posts, as I was doing other things like writing blogs and managing our TripAdvisor’s business page, writing and updating our website’s content and other things as well . All in all, I  was making a lot of effort here and there to increase my sales through online channels or increasing traffic to my website.

However, somehow I was not getting the desired results. I soon realized, I lacked the technical know how of digital marketing. No matter how good we are at delivering our services as a travel service provider, if we cannot reach our potential customers, they will never know we exist and we would not be able to see an exponential growth in our business.

How I landed up with UpGrad?

So, I don’t remember clearly, but I must have stumbled upon some articles on digital marketing trends. Suddenly, my Instagram page was flooded with options of different courses. I might have been lured to interact with an attractive looking ad. I soon started seeing more and more ads, until finally I left my Email Id and phone number with UpGrad’s website. There was no looking back since then.

As they say, the more you see something, the brand recall value as perceived by existing and potential customers also increases. Then, I was the potential customer of UpGrad and its marketing strategies surely made it look lucrative and converted me into one of its customers 😛

My Journey so far..

Here, I shall share my journey, highlighting the triumph, challenges and my key take aways from this journey.

My onboarding process was smooth. The program kicked off with an introduction to marketing, setting the stage for the exciting journey ahead. The initial modules focused on building a solid foundation in marketing principles, consumer behavior, and digital marketing channels. I must admit that initially I felt it was too much of theoretical learning but when I was given a hands on case study project on a real world company’s intention to enter a new segment as the company’s marketing head, I realized how important these concepts were and how they helped to take certain decisions and planning the strategies for the company. I appreciated the emphasis on understanding customer needs and creating effective marketing strategies. Diving Deeper into the course We started from basics of building a website on WordPress platform. As the program progressed, we delved into advanced topics like Search Engine Optimization(SEO), Search Engine Marketing (SEM), Social Media Marketing, Email Marketing and analysing the results of all our marketing efforts(Digital Marketing Metrics). Complex concepts like CAC(Customer Acquisition Cost), CLV(Customer Lifetime Value), Customer Retention Rate, Customer Churn Rate, etc. were explained and then we were tested on this by conducting quizzes and hands on calculation exercise to calculate the feasibility of a marketing campaign. These activities were very interesting and engaging. The expertise of the instructors and the entire curriculum design made all this so accessible and rewarding. The Learning Platform of UpGrad is another plus point here. From giving us an idea of our learning pace with respect to others in our batch, our learning streak, our daily goals, the discusiion forum etc. kept us motivated through out the program. With each completed module in the given deadline, it gave us a sense of accomplishment.

Challenges

While the program is incredibly rewarding, it isn’t without its challenges

  • Managing time effectively and balancing the course curriculum along with the professional responsibilities required quite a discipline, dedication and regularity.
  • The sheer volume of the content was daunting, making it challenging to retain everything.
  • At times, I felt isolated, but then the doubt solving sessions were very helpful and a confidence booster. I just wished the live doubt solving sessions were more personalized in terms of number of participants attending so that individual doubts could be resolved in lesser time.  I felt, the feedback on our individual assignments and projects were not accurate. But again, its too early to comment on that actually.

Advantages

  • Convenience – the online format allowed me to learn at my own pace, anytime and anywhere.
  • Interactive sessions – live webinars, doubt clearing sessions, PI sessions and Q&A sessions with industry experts were incredibly valuable.
  • Self paced learning and session recording availability – I could revisit modules and the recordings multiple times, reinforcing my understanding of complex and novel concepts.
